Background:

The brief for this project was to create a retreat. From the age of 6, I have practiced kyokushin style karate. This informed the decision to design a dojo retreat. Due to the vernacular style of Canterbury which is the site of the project, I decided to stay away from the Japanese style that may seem like a suitable approach to designing a dojo.
